In The Hot Seat on "Morning Joe"
Richard Stengel, Time magazine's editor-in-chief, announced next week's cover story, "What Makes A School Great" which, if judged by the teacher-obsessed conversation on today's MSNBC's "Morning Joe", should have been called, "What Makes A Great Teacher?" or "Teachers Really Matter".
Mika Brzezinski brought up the newly released "Waiting for Superman" movie - "everyone should see it" - which is packing additional heat to an already hot topic. Time also released their recent poll numbers - some very surprising - involving our country's view of our education system and it isn't pretty. You may also want to check out the Time article, "What Common Standards For Schools Can And Can't Do".
Tina Brown, editor of The Daily Beast, jumps in at about the 2:40 minute mark bringing up our standardized test score/ statistics obsession and Stengel counters with his argument about how our country's standards have fallen and a correction was needed, implying this data-orientation was the way to resolve this issue. Pat Buchanan raised the concern of why increased spending does not necessarily translate to better education for our students.
Mika and Joe Scarborough will be hosting "Education Nation" town hall on September 26th.
