Colbert to Parents: Keep Fear Alive

Just the other day my twelve-year-old daughter came home from school completely devastated by what she found.  Visibly shaken, she began to describe a display of "banned" books in her school library.  There were the culprits - laid out on a table, wrapped in brown paper with descriptions - why they were not appropriate for childrens' eyes or minds - in full display.  
Yes, folks, titles such as "Alice in Wonderland" because animals don't talk;  "Harry Potter" because magic is not real;  and then the clincher, "To Kill a Mockingbird" because there was too much violence (I also suspect not the only reason).  These three were among her favorites and she was "ready to start a petition" or even a "march on Washington".  There had to be some kind of mistake. . .  

Turns out, there was.  Another display at the front desk outlined the intent of the exhibit:  illustrating how some schools actually ban these very books (horrors!) regardless of age of the student and why this school library did not.   The librarian thanked me for the alert
about the misunderstanding  - we shared a good-humored eye-ball roll - and she later gave  more of an "official" presentation to students to prevent any more crushed souls.
