Bright Spots For Jobs: College Grads

Light At The End Of This Tunnel

With the incessantly sobering and depressing news about the job market for college grads, including a popular post from The Daily Riff, Graduation Mash-Up: Reality Check, we found two stories to lift our spirits and hopes that there is light at the end of this tunnel, folks.

First, The Daily Beast reports on the "25 Best Cities For College Grads" which may surprise and get bags packing (Santa Barbara?  Wonder what rents are like - who wouldn't want to live there?).  Plus, they offer up quick and tasty factoids about each town - who knew?  To whet your appetite, here are the top five:

1)  Ithaca NY
2)  Madison WI
3)  Ann Arbor MI
4)  Durham NC
5)  Austin-Round Rock TX

Next is The Wall Street Journal reporting on "Silicon Valley Pressures High Tech Hiring", which is a good sign.  While the real numbers are not staggering, the message is one we all would like to hear more of (from other sectors, as well, such as education):

"The pickup in tech hiring is spreading beyond Silicon Valley, forcing companies outside the big tech center to rethink their recruiting tactics.

Companies in second-tier tech locations such as Austin, Texas, and Raleigh, N.C., had an easier time recruiting talented employees during the slump. But now that Silicon Valley firms have started aggressively hiring, and the general economy is improving, competition is stiffening. . . "

" . . . In Raleigh, N.C., Red Hat Inc. has also seen greater competition in recent months. In March, the maker of open-source software started retraining hiring managers as the firm looks to add 800 employees to its 3,200-person work force this year. . . "
